IPSWICH Town fans, take note, it’s pie-in-the-sky to even talk about the play-offs.
Brighton boss Gus Poyet has poured cold water on any Town supporters’ dreams of gate-crashing the top six, and so making a bid for the Premier League.
The Seagulls, who entertain in-form Town on Saturday, are a mighty nine points better off than their Suffolk rivals, and only two points adrift of the top six.
Yet a plain-speaking Poyet has dismissed all hopes of his Brighton side securing a second successive promotion, even though they remain unbeaten in the Championship during 2012.
The Uruguayan’s words would seem to make a mockery of Town fans’ own faint hopes of late season glory.
“We are not ready for the Premier League,” insisted Poyet, whose Brighton side were hammered 6-1 by Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday.
“I have been very honest for the last two or three months when people talk about promotion. People thought I was being negative. Now maybe they will say I was right.
“There has been a lot of excitement because we are doing all right, but we are not ready,” added Poyet.
Ninth-placed Brighton, who sit just two points behind sixth-placed Birmingham, are in action again tomorrow night at fellow play-off contenders Hull City.
That 560-mile round trip, from the south coast to Humberside, will not be the ideal build up to Saturday’s big game against Ipswich.
Paul Jewell’s men will be gunning for a fifth win on the trot, on what will be their first visit to the Seagulls’ new Falmer Stadium.
Town have not won five games on the spin since October, 2003, when Joe Royle’s men beat Rotherham, Bradford, Burnley, Stoke and Crystal Palace on their way to a top six finish in the Championship.
n Ipswich Town Reserves’ friendly fixture against Crystal Palace this afternoon is no longer open to the public. It is now a behind-closed-doors match.

Rob the resident budgie was not 'political canary' on the old 606 board. 'Political' was idealogically misguided but good value for his footie comments (I was the 'feather pluckers club ' incidentally).

Well you know what they say Chris Cooper, if all else fails you become an estate agent, a journalist or a politician!

Good to se Rob that from a Budgie perspective you are more optimistic about Town's prospects for the rset of the season. No more relegation dogfight - mid-table respectability here we come. Like the last sentence of your post, quite snappy. You should get a job on the EADT with one liners like that.

Does it, at the end of the day really matter what is said or not said ? ITFC must play on their own merits, disregard other Managers, their fans and old uncle Tom Cobbley and all and just keep getting the three points per game and see where it takes them. Yes, there are a lot of points still available, but these same points are equally available to the other sides in the Championship and several need to falter in order for Town to succeed. So, heads down and plough that furrow you blue boys.

"Pie in the Sky". Your words not Gus Poyet's. He is a straight talking manager, talking about his own team. Make of it what you will but don't be so touchy and negative and concentrate on the positives. You obviously can't see any if this kind of story that even makes it to print.

This is a very, very bad piece of journalism. The comments made by Poyet were done so in the after match interview he gave following Brightons loss to Liverpool. He made no mention whatsoever of Ipswich Town and to infer otherwise is mischievous to say the least. He merely stated a fact, which I witnessed, namely that Brighton are not ready for the Premier League. That's it nothing more. So John Burls these are not pre-match comments (post match actually) and should never have been taken out of context in the manner they have been.

Why put such a negative spin on Town's progress by these comments from Poyet (which have nothing to do with Ipswich anyway)? I'm hoping that Town continue their good form and make a mockery of such lazy journalism from the Eve Star!

Typical pre match comment from the opposition manager. I'll predict 2-1 to us.

Clever psychology by Poyet. After Brighton's recent hammering, he wants his team not to take anything for granted. Very smart of him. I used to live in Brighton as a student but never got around to going to the old Goldstone Ground to see a match. If Ipswich can get 5 wins on the spin, then Rob Steroo's going to have a nasty turn.

Actually it is you lazy EADT journos who are making a 'mockey', presumably shorthand for mockery, of Poyet's commonsense words. Brighton are on course for a mid-table finish which is a fine achievement for them and something for a sensible and promising management duo to build on. The simple fact is that Town are equally on course for a mid-table finish... so this is effectively a dead rubber between two teams who will finish side by side. One because of their management team.., the other despite their management team.
