RICHARD Stearman has signed a loan deal with Ipswich Town that will run until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old, who can play at centre-half or right-back, has found himself down the pecking order at Molineux under new boss, Dean Saunders.

Stearman should make his Blues debut at home to Middlesbrough, on Saturday – most likely at right-back – now loanee Bradley Orr has returned to parent club, Blackburn Rovers.

Ex-Leicester player Stearman, who stands at 6ft 3ins, has been capped at England Under-21 level and is already closing in on 250 Football League appearances.

  • How come virtually every article put on the ITFC page gets a comment from Stereo or Ged (or both)? We all know how difficult it is to get a comment past the moderator, so do Stereo or Ged just bombard them or is there a special hotline?

  • Cyril, I just suspect the wage bill is pretty high, particularly having to pay wages for loanees from Premier League clubs. I also wouldn't be surprised if he looks at deals like the ones for Priskin, Martin, Leadbitter and Edwards, and before them McAuley, Norris, Stead, Civelli, and thinks giving players long contracts is a mugs game, when said players have either left on a free or had to be paid off to get rid of them. I think we'll get a clearer picture in the summer, when MM has a season budget to work with and has told the owner what he wants.

  • GorlestonBoy - you're half right in that it's true that if he doesn't shape up MM will not have to sign him. However bitter experience shows that if he does he will either return to his parent club or accept a more lucrative long term contract elswhere.

  • Andrew if you really believe that 1.5 million is the budget that our owner is prepared to invest then I am afraid you have a lifetime in the championship or lower to look forward to. Unfortunately I think you are propbably right.

  • As there's no option in the poll... perhaps 'left-back'... in the dressing room as the old joke goes! Cover for centre-back can't be a bad thing but I thought MM was looking specifically for a right-back to replace Bradley Orr, not just someone who can 'play in the position'? Let's give the lad a chance though - what option do we have? Transfer window closure looms so it's time to buckle up for the bumpy ride to May and see where we are then.

  • Well personally I look forward to seeing him play. At least then I'll be able to make a judgement. Which, of course, most on here are forgetting to do. McCarthy's hands are probably tied after Jewell blew the budget on chasing Taylor.

  • Oh my god!!! here comes the influx of Wolverhampton cast-offs as predicted when clown mccarthy so unfortunately took over. Remind me how well are Wolverhampton doing and Stearman is not selected for that struggling side. So he may leave one struggling side for even a worse one, what do that say for his mindset then? Thats right a loser!!!

  • So yet another loan then !!!!!! This time from a Wolves team just one point ahead of us in the table & having acknowledged that they to are also in a relgation dog fight. You have to ask yourself therefore whether they would do this if they thought Stearman had any realistic chance of improving a rivals team ?? One suspects he is coming here as a replacement for the largely ineffectual Orr - who was preferred to our own Hewitt last week even though we knew he was going back to Blackburn. Shades of Jewell last season playing Leadbitter right up until the last minute even though we knew he was on his way out of the club. Just what sort of message does this send to our own players trying to establish themselves or to the supporters that we may be trying to build a team for the future.

  • The result against Bristol City didn't surprise me at all. There is a fatal fragility about the side which was clear to see against Barnsley the week before, our worst performance this season. We were lucky not to lose 4-1. The midfield was bereft of ideas, porous and negative. Edwards, usually energetic and reliable, was tentative and Martin, as ever, was busy but ineffectual. McCarthy is as bad as Keane and Jewell, patching up the side with loanees he knows from the past, and stropping when his lame ideas fail to produce results. Substituting McGoldrick with Chopra, who hardly touched the ball for 20 minutes, created no added value whatsoever. We may escape relegation but we don't deserve to. It's a long time since I saw a team as inept and feeble as Ipswich in the Championship.

  • Look on the EDP comments on Narich...some bloke is a regular on there who is apparently called 'Ged Steroo' and he keeps going on about his fans! So they are the same sad person with too much time on their hands and too much bitterness towards a historically better club who show signs of progressing in the right direction. Oh sorry, shouldn't bring up history should I, we all know how they hate that line of conversation. Anyway let's see how Stearman gets on and judge him after a few games. If he's not up to it MM doesn't have to sign him up, so no worries eh Mr Steroo.

  • Andrew how can the wage bill be higher when we got rid of of the decent players to reduce the wage bill, on top of that the numbers in our squad are at an all time low. On top of that the owner is not standing the cost that just goes onto the loan out of which I understand he earns a healthy interest. Sorry for raising that point again.

  • When Mick came in he lifted the side, where most of the players had something to prove. Sadly the honeymoon is now over, and Mick obviously feels that some of the team are unable to met his criteria and adapt to his style. It is only natural then, that he rounds up players that he either knows or rates well enough to do a job here. Also the current squad probably know where they stand with Mick and some will be moved on. Mick's instructions when he came in was to keep the club in the Championship. If he does that, he will have achieved his target. The next step will depend on where we play our football next season. If we do stay up, and that is very much in doubt, then ME will either get the cheque book out or hand over to the next incumbent. But be careful what you wish for.

  • absolutely agree old timer and don't like having a borrowed team. hopefully we can get a mid table finish. so that in the summer we can look a slightly better prospect for some better players to sign for us permanently. Maybe then we can progress. All maybe's unfortumatly but I do think MM will get us moving the right way.....maybe!

  • Why does the EADT persist with unquestioningly toeing the ruinous, asset-stripping line being cynically churned out of Portman Road? If only No Loans would do what he said and STOP getting in pointless loans at least there would be a modicum of interest in the remaining games this season. All he is doing is wasting the benefits of the dead cat bounce which inevitably followed Jewell's departure - and recreating exactly the same clueless recipe for abject failure that his two predecessors were hugely rewarded for. The seemingly endless list of has-been and never-will-be players rolling in and out of the door is as depressing as the mindless utterings of has-been managers repeating all the same mistakes.

  • What position should Richard Stearman play ? Left back, in the changing room like the rest of the under achievers. My God ,(No disrespect Lord) what a hell of a job MM has if he keeps this lot up. Virtually the whole side needs remodeling. We are so far away from being a good side, that past Managers should be downright ashamed of the mess they have left this club in. We have stumbled around in this League for far too long, in fact, the longest any team has been in this League. Whilst no team has a devine right to anything the money made available and the costly mistakes with Norris, Rhodes and McCauley to name only a few have all lead to where we are know.
