LUKE Chambers’ move to Ipswich Town is close to completion with the centre back due to undergo a medical later this afternoon.
We understand the 26-year-old is in Suffolk today and will have a medical ahead of his free transfer move to Portman Road.
Chambers officially left Nottingham Forest – where he was captain and a one-time player of the year – at the weekend and despite late interest from Leeds United, Town are expected to complete the formalities on a move for the free agent.
He is set to meet his new team mates for the first time on Thursday for the start of official pre-season training but the deal could be completed as early as tonight – although sources close to the player suggest an unveiling is more likely tomorrow.
Jewell, who has already signed promising teenage right-back Elliott Hewitt from Macclesfield Town, has deliberately kept his cards close to his chest to ward off any rival bids.
But the manager will be delighted to snap up Chambers, having tracked the central defender all summer.
The former Forest and Northampton Town man has more than 400 competitive games under his belt and his signature will be a massive boost for Town fans ahead of what is expected to be an even more competitive Championship next season.
Meanwhile, French-Guinea teenager Cheik Kourouma is staying at Ibrahima Sonko’s house – the released Town defender having recommended him to Jewell – and awaits the call from the Suffolk club to come and complete the formalities surrounding his move.
The 19-year-old box-to-box midfielder, who has most recently been playing for Genoa’s reserve side in Italy, impressed during a trial at Playford Road at the end of last season.
Last night, Blackburn Rovers, who visit Portman Road on the opening day of the season, announced the signing of striker Leon Best from Newcastle United for £3 million.

Good signing. Put Scott Loach behind him and our defence actually looks half decent !

Excellent news. Shows that despite our nerves Mr Jewell is quietly going about his business.
