COLCHESTER United boss, Joe Dunne, was incensed with the officials’ decision to allow William Edjenguele’s goal to stand during last night’s 3-1 defeat to Coventry City.

The goal was initially wiped out for offside, but that decision was then over-ruled following consultation between referee Trevor Kettle and his assistant, who had raised his flag promptly.

The goal handed the Sky Blues a 2-0 lead, on 37 minutes, and was certainly a key moment in the game.

“I think the assistant actually over-ruled himself, with his flag still in the air!” rued Dunne.

“Honestly, I am stumped.

“I always made a promise with myself, when I became a manager, never to get aggressive with officials.

“And I haven’t been aggressive with the officials. Generally, I think they have a hard enough job as it is.

“But we have had a couple of calls now, in the last three games (also at Crewe in a 3-2 defeat) that have aided us in not being able to win the game.

“The officials explained to me their views on it (Coventry’s second goal), which I find incredible.

“They know the laws of the game. It’s a hard job, and they don’t make (bad) calls on purpose.

“But the linesman was so sure – we’ve seen the video and the flag went up straight away – for the initial movement of the guy (Gary McSheffrey).

“The ball has gone over his (McSheffrey’s) head but he has attacked the ball and gone with my goalkeeper, so how can he not be interfering with play?” added Dunne.
