Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy believes Leeds United counterpart Garry Monk will be a serious contender for the Championship’s Manager of the Year award at the end of the season.

Monk, who was appointed at Elland Road in the summer, has guided the West Yorkshire side to fifth position in the Championship, eight points off the automatic spots, ahead of Saturday’s clash at Portman Road.

Monk did not get off to the best of starts at Leeds, the Whites losing two and drawing one of their first three second tier games, but has since turned it around and could well be back in the Premier League next season, having managed Swansea City there previously.

Asked about the job he has done at Leeds, McCarthy said: “Brilliant.

“Considering the start he had, did they lose six on the bounce or something and, of course he was predicted to be the next one out, he is arguably a contender for Manager of the Season in our league.

“There is a few of them mind, Paul Heckingbottom at Barnsley and David Wagner at Huddersfield stand out for me, as does Garry Monk.

“It is a fantastic club and they have sort of struggled along, I don’t know how many managers they have had, and there are no stories coming out of the club anymore.

“It’s all settled down, it’s calm, it appears to be, and that’s down to Garry. He gets the best out of his players and his team are playing very, very well.”

Monk was equally generous in his praise of McCarthy, meanwhile, saying: “Mick is fantastic, he is a really good football man and a very experienced manager.

“I have come up against him and his teams and having spoken to him outside of football, he is someone I have huge respect for.

“In the Championship every game is so competitive, fine margins decide games and we have to go down to Ipswich and put our game on the pitch and focus on ourselves.

“We know what we are going to face and we know what we have to do well in order to try and win the game.

“Hopefully we can go down there, put on a performance to be proud of and be in with a chance of winning the three points.”
