MANAGERIAL MERRY-GO ROUND: Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy reveals sympathy for ex-Huddersfield Town boss Mark Robins

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has expressed some surprise at Mark Robins’ departure from Huddersfield Town, after just one game of the season, but admitted the odds were stacked against the former Manchester United striker.

Robins parted company with the Terriers by mutual consent after Saturday’s 4-0 home drubbing by Bournmemouth, who also missed a penalty during the game, but McCarthy revealed sections of the home crowd were turning on the ex-Rotherham boss during Ipswich’s 2-0 win there, late last season.

“As it happened before? I am not sure if anyone has left a club or been sacked after the first game,” said McCarthy.

“I certainly wasn’t stunned. I was there last season when we beat Huddersfield and there was not a nice atmosphere at all towards Mark. That’s never nice to see as a fellow manager, especially as I have been on the receiving end of it.

“But to put your faith in him and let him sign players and do pre-season, for him then to go after one game, that is a bit shocking and seems a bit ridiculous.

“Having experienced what I did when we won there, and then for them to lose 4-0 on the opening game and Bournemouth to miss a penalty, I am surprised they did it.

“But am I? Nothing ever surprises me in football.

“It was a tough one for him (Robins) and I feel for him as he works hard at it.”
