MICK McCarthy has been left impressed by the standard within Ipswich Town’s youth ranks.

That is the view of Under-18s boss Russell Osman after he revealed McCarthy has had an opportunity to see the emerging talents.

Osman revealed: “He has had a couple of practice matches where he wanted to have a look at a couple of senior trialists.

“It has given him the opportunity to look at some of the kids the same time. I think he has been quite pleased, he sees the nucleus of players there that could be a backbone for a solid Under-21s side in the future.”

First things first is tonight’s FA Youth Cup third round match at Ashton Gate when Town will face a Bristol City side they have already lost 4-0 to this season (7pm ko).

Previewing the game, Osman, who still lives in Bristol, said: “We have seen video footage and we are under no illusion that we are going to be in for a tough match.

“They are hard-working, physical and try and play a solid, all-round game.

“They pass the ball well and they have a bit of pace upfront, so we have got to be prepared to defend well, play well, and make sure we gain the initiative in the match and keep it.

“Our lads are all hungry to try and gain revenge, especially with it being the FA Youth Cup.”

The competition holds a special place in the hearts of Town fans with the club winning it on three occasions.

Osman, who played in two of those victorious campaigns, said: “We have got a very good record and we would like that to continue – we have got a good reputation as an academy, we produce good players and when you do well in the FA Youth Cup, it is the icing on the cake.

“The lads will be playing under lights and as far as I’m concerned, you cannot beat a football match under lights in the evening.

“Tonight is all about the result, rather than a league development game. It will be fantastic for the lads.”

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy believes young defender Chris Smith returned from his loan spell at Chelmsford ‘more of a bloke’ and is hopeful he has a first team future.

Ipswich Town U18 Academy boss Alan Lee is hoping his young charges can keep up the proud Blues tradition of success in youth football, with victory against Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round tonight, at Portman Road, 7pm ko.
