Manchester United have announced manager David Moyes has “left the club” after less than a season in charge.

The Scotsman’s 10-month reign as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor was announced on the club’s Twitter feed this morning.

A statement from the club, released at 8.30am, read: “Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the club.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.”

The former Everton manager signed a six-year contract worth £4 million a year when he replaced Ferguson last summer.

Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs will become United’s interim manager until the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp, currently with Borussia Dortmund, Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal, Atletico Madrid’s Argentinian boss Diego Simeone and the former manager of the French national team, Laurent Blanc, have all been linked with the job on a permanent basis.
