A week is a long time in Point-To-Point racing, as was demonstrated by trainer Tom Ellis at the Cambridgeshire with Enfield Chace fixture at Horseheath, near Haverhill on Sunday.

A shock 20-1 upset in the feature event, the £1,000 Timico Mixed Open, was the highlight of yesterday’s Dunston Harriers point-to-point at Ampton, near Bury St Edmunds, which survived a 10am inspection, frost, rain and mist to reward a crowd of hardy enthusiasts with some excellent racing, as 65 runners contested its seven steeplechases.

Newmarket is expected to be one of the major beneficiaries of an ambitious 10-year plan unveiled by the Jockey Club to invest at least half a billion pounds into British racing.
