Defender Adam Webster says speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League is premature and insists his loyalties lie with Ipswich Town.

This time last year the 22-year-old ball-playing centre-back was impressing for League Two side Portsmouth in FA Cup third round games against the Blues.

That led to a £700k summer switch to Portman Road and, after taking the step up two divisions in his stride, he was tipped as a top-flight player in the making by boss Mick McCarthy.

Town fans have worried that a Premier League club looking to discover the next John Stones may try and snap him up during the January transfer window, but the former England Under-19 international’s feet remain firmly on the floor.

“I’ve got to prove I can play at this level before people start talking about me moving anywhere. I’m not thinking about anything like that,” he said.

“If I’m honest, I’ve not been too happy with my own personal form of late. That’s something that I’m working hard to put right in the upcoming games.

“Obviously there has been a couple of errors, which have led to goals, which is frustrating.

“Hopefully I can put that behind me.”

On talk of a quickfire move further up the ladder, he said: “I don’t really take much notice of any of that stuff. I just want to focus on my football and let that do the talking.

“My loyalties lie with Ipswich. I’m an Ipswich player. There is always speculation with players week-in, week-out. That’s just the media.

“I’ve just got to keep my head down and play my football.”

Webster lost his man at a long-throw and, following a poor clearance, was subsequently beaten by a long ball for both of QPR’s goals in Monday’s 2-1 Championship defeat at Loftus Road.

He said: “I’m learning a lot, training every day with better players and coming up against some of the best strikers in the league. I’ve obviously got the gaffer and TC (Terry Connor) helping me improve.

“Has it been a good start for me at Ipswich? Well, I don’t know. I’ve got high standards and I pride myself on being as good as I can be.

“The mistakes I’ve made recently have been frustrating. Hopefully, with work on the training ground, I can erase them and move on and not let it happen again.”

Town host non-league side Lincoln City in the FA Cup third round tomorrow.
