Four-time Olympic champion Hoy won the sprint last night and that followed his win in the Keirin on day three and third place in the team sprint on Friday.

Great Britain secured eight medals in total, from 10 Olympic events, four gold, one silvers and two bronze in the non-Olympic individual pursuit.

“This is the best we’ve been as a team since Beijing. The fact we’ve been very good in a number of events on the Olympic track itself means you come back here and get that good vibe,” said Hoy.

“It’s like racing in Manchester. We’ve got so many positive experiences to draw upon. We’ll benefit from this.”

On his own performance, Hoy, 35, added: “I was expecting some good performances, but this is the best I’ve been since Beijing. No question.”

Meanwhile, former Mildenhall Bicycle Club member Victoria Pendleton claimed a world record and the gold medal in the team sprint, with Jess Varnish and fourth place in the sprint.

“I really haven’t slept much since Friday night and it takes its toll,” said Pendleton, who had three hours’ sleep a night as a result of the rigours of competition.

“If this is the worst possible scenario it’s going to be much, much nicer in the Olympics.

“It’s been a wonderful track to ride. On the whole it’s been a huge success.”
