The forward was sent off in the 28th minute of Stow’s 2-1 comeback win against Histon on Tuesday night for an alleged elbow on Histon’s James Carman.

Mayhew, who will be available for Stow’s trip to Saffron Walden Town tomorrow (3pm), could miss most, if not all, of Andrews’ side’s triple header next week through suspension.

But the Stow boss says he believes the sending off was a wrong decision and has hinted he may attempt to get the decision reversed if the video of the game backs up his opinion.

“I don’t think it was a red,” he said. “I think their player has put his arm out and Josh has pushed him away.

“The referee seems to think it’s an elbow and is putting that in his report. If that’s the case, we’ll look at the video and if it clearly isn’t an elbow then pushing somebody off the ball isn’t a red card.

“It was a shame Josh got sent off, but we’ll look at the video and see if it’s there to be appealed, if it’s not we’ll take it on the chin. It’s just unfortunate for him.”

Stow produced a remarkable comeback from a goal and a man down to beat Histon at Greens Meadow earlier this week, with Angelo Harrop and Jack Baker both scoring in the final 15 minutes for Andrews’ side, who finished the game with nine men after Luke Read was sent off in-between the two Stow goals.

The victory, a third in a row for the Old Gold and Blacks, moved them back up to third in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division table.

After the trip to eighth-placed Walden, Stow travel to Haverhill Rovers (18th) on Tuesday (7.45pm) and then host bottom side Wivenhoe Town on Thursday (7.45pm).

On Tuesday’s comeback win, which was Andrews’ 100th victory as Stow boss, he said: “The boys have shown phenomenal grit and desire and attitude and they’re a credit to the club.”
