Katy Sealy nursed herself through her second Commonwealth Games appearance and just failed to deliver on her top ten target, writes James Toney.

The 27-year old Suffolk heptathlete lives in Bawdsey but competes for Belize because her father was born there.

She was ninth four years ago in Glasgow but a troublesome calf injury meant she finished 11th on the Gold Coast - setting a personal best in the 100m hurdles.

But she admitted the competition didn’t all go according to her best laid plans, with a 5.13m long jump well off her best.

“It is nice to have finished because I was so down after that long jump,” he said. “My calf is killing me but I live to fight another day.

“The long jump was a nightmare, I don’t really know what to say about it. I felt alright warming up but on the runway I was just missing that something.

“I have had this calf problem for a year, I tore it this time last year, but I thought I was OK – but whether it was the travel or what but this week I seem to have struggled with it.

“All day I have been contemplating whether to run in the 800m or not, how fast I was going to run, whether I was going to for it or just finish.

“All of that has been going through my head, I have literally been crying all day – I’m trying to hold it together now. The score is not very good but I have completed by second Commonwealth Games.”

Sealy, who made her Olympic debut in Rio, admits it will take a lot to continue to a third Games in Birmingham in four years but still has athletic ambitions to fulfil.

“At the Central American Championship in June I am going for my fifth in a row so I really want to do that,” she added.

“I’m very proud though, I love being here representing Belize, amongst these girls. There is nothing better than that.”
