Katherine Ryan is best known for her caustic comedy style on panel shows such as Mock the Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats,

She showed this in her full-length stand-up routine at a near full Ipswich Regent on Saturday night.

With fellow comedian Brad Goldstein warming up the audience nicely before her 60-minute set, she quickly demonstrated that her comedic ability extends far beyond the constraints of the usually male-centric panel shows.

With no gimmicky backdrops the sparse stage suited what was to come, with no doubt that she is best when on the stand up solo circuit.

Moments of improvisation and audience participation make it clear that she isn’t reliant on a script or a panel of other comedians to be funny. Her style suited having the stage all to herself, dominating the space, and provided an evening of feisty frivolity.

Topics ranged from some very teasingly saucy opinions on Celine Dion, R Kelly, Bill Cosby AND the Kardashians, to a rant at a mythical know-all called Jane, (who the audience could all relate to as knowing at some time or other).

All delivered in Katherine’s wry deadpan style.

Delving into her roots and being proud of being, as she puts it, an immigrant to this country as a Canadian with Irish DNA, she had the audience laughing loudly at her stories of her very British daughter Violet’s look on life compared to hers.

Usually, to sit in the front row of a comedy stand up can be dangerous, as you know you may be a target.

However Katherine’s timing and interaction with her “victims” (Scott, Tracey AND John) this time was clever and slick, remembering their names as she flitted from one to another with ease, mocking without embarrassing... well not too much!

A very enjoyable evening of stand-up humour, and one that hopefully will be repeated when Katherine next takes her likeable and laid back style on the road.

If you missed her this time, try not to next time round.
