Archant

The obscure sport of ‘dwile flonking’ will be taking centre stage at a Suffolk pub’s beer festival this weekend as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of an annual competition.

The reportedly ancient game, which involves two wellington-clad teams, a beer-soaked rag on a stick, and a bizarre set of oddly termed rules, will be one of the main attractions over four days of bank holiday fun at the White Lion in Ufford.

Stephen Thurlow, owner of the award winning pub, said: “It’s an idyllic setting with a very traditional flavour to the festivities. We always get a good audience watching the extravaganza and everyone thoroughly enjoys themselves.”

Alongside the dwile flonking on Sunday, there will also be dilly cart races, rounders, skittles and table tennis competitions and live music.

Around 20 ales, including several brewed on site, will be served along with cider and freshly cooked food.

The festival runs from Friday to Monday afternoon.
