Stitchworks is located near Gobbitts Yard and run by Karen Meyers who says she has a “passion” for teaching young people needlecraft.

She provides alterations for both men’s and women’s clothes, while the sewing classes are aimed at the “teens and ‘tweens” - children aged from 9 to 18.

“I think lots of kids are interested in sewing but because few parents sew they can‘t help them,” she said.

“When I was young sewing was important to me and I remember the frustration of really wanting to learn more and not having the support. I want to help young people get started - it is a true passion of mine.

“Parents I’ve spoken to want their children to learn as well. Two of the high schools in the area offer a GCSE in textiles and there is a demand for outside tuition to back up their learning.”

Karen, who took a start-up course with Menta prior to launching her business, says she has had a “positive response” since the shop opened in December and has had support from nearby shop Fiona’s Fabrics.

She added: “Fiona has been really supportive - she runs adult classes but hasn’t the time to dedicate to young people, so we complement each other well. She sells fabrics and I offer sewing classes.”

Stitch works also features a gift shop showcasing the work of local crafts people including wool and felted accessories, prints jewellery, mugs, soap and cards.

“This is a creative area - people are interested in buying and selling handmade items.

“If they come into the shop, there’s a chance they may meet the artist. It’s nice when you buy from the person who made it - there’s a story behind the item and it makes it that little bit more special.”
