Woolco is looking to recruit two plumbers in Ipswich and a third in Norwich through Jobs24, taking the number of plumbers on their books from 14 to 17.

Sara Smith, of the Norfolk-based firm, said: “It is mainly for domestic maintenance work such as leaking taps, leaks under concrete and heating pipe leaks.

“The calls could be coming in any time of the day or night, so we need people who can work on a rota basis with out-of-hours cover.”

The jobs have been created because of rising demand from a national insurance company, and Sara explained more. “People used to just take out emergency cover so the insurance company only called us out when there was a major problem but increasingly people are taking out maintenance policies along with their insurance.

“People like to know they are covered and that if they have a leaky tap the insurance company will cover it, with no unexpected bills.”

The change in types of policies offered means that plumbers are increasingly in demand.

“Finding a plumber in an emergency can be hard,” said Sara.

The company is seeking someone with experience, ideally someone who has worked on repairs rather than just installation.

Offering advice to anyone considering plumbing as a career, Sara said: “Train with a small company so you will get good all-around experience, rather than going on sites and just doing installations. That way you learn about what can go wrong and how to deal with it.”

The new jobs are mobile, with occasional visits to the company’s head office in Acle.

Successful candidates will be provided with a company van, uniform and smart phone and will log jobs electronically.
