Framlingham nurse Janet Walne died after a cardiac arrest

Framlingham nurse practitioner Janet Walne, who served her community for 25 years, died on February 15 suddenly and unexpectedly in her husband Andrew's arms following a cardiac arrest, despite having no underlying health conditions and having not visited a doctor since 2017.

Now her family have launched a fundraising initiative through the website JustGiving for the Framlingham First Responders in memory of Mrs Walne's devotion to the medical community.

She worked in GP surgeries in Framlingham, Laxfield and Earl Soham, having trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and the University of East Anglia.

So far, the appeal has raised £3,681 of its £4,000 target to pay for a third life-saving kit for the responders, who are trained medical volunteers, which will include a defibrillator - a device that restarts hearts - and oximeter, which can check blood oxygen levels.

Mrs Walne's son Tom said: "We have been a little surprised by the amount of support we have had and it has been quite touching."

He said the support had been 'phenomenal,' raising £1,600 in just eight hours.

"Another kit will enable greater support, coverage and likelihood of assisting somebody in need.

"In the rural areas where ambulances can take time, nearby first responders provide crucial help in time-critical situations.

"Sadly, Janet was taken from us far too soon despite admirable efforts, but the family has every intention of raising awareness for these fantastic people.

"Maximising the chances for those who may benefit from first responders will enable Janet to live on, proudly caring for our community."
