Bomb squad investigates suspicious bottles of liquid at property in Hadleigh

Police were called to a bungalow in Lady Lane at 8.50am. The homeowner said the police were called after two plastic bottles of liquid were found in the garden which he thought had been thrown over in a prank.

Residents within a 50 metre radius of the property, near the roundabout of the A1071, were told to stay inside and keep doors and windows closed.

The device was inspected by the bomb disposal team from 621 Squadron based at Colchester Garrison

A police spokesman said earlier they were dealing with a “potentially explosive device” and “could not go into more details”.

This afternoon four police cars, a police van and a police forensics van have been at the property.

The Army personnel used a bomb disposal robot at the scene. A spokesman for the soldiers classed what was found as a “grenade” which was later made safe.

Suffolk Constabulary has launched an investigation into the incident. The spokesman said: “We are making ongoing enquiries to determine exactly what the device is, where it came from and how it came to be there.”

Bryany Gales, 21, was at home on maternity leave at a nearby property when police told her not to go near the side of her house closest to the bungalow.

“They said there was nothing to worry about, just keep the doors and windows shut,” she said. “They said they would come back and say when it was clear. They said they were doing it in case of a ‘worst case scenario’ and that it was precautionary.”

Neighbour Emily Wright was at home with her two-year-old daughter when police told her about the incident.

“I felt very nervous, I have got a little one in doors and I am meant to be picking up another one from school,” she said.

“I do not know if I can leave the house or not. I did not know what it was until I saw a link to an EADT story.”
