Plans have been lodged for 25 homes to be built on land near the Priors estate in Bury St Edmunds.

The application from the Havebury Housing Partnership would see 11 affordable houses and 14 assisted units built alongside a communal hub for carers on South Close, close to Riverwalk School off Hospital Road.

The plans would see the demolition of two vacant buildings on the site – the South Court Old People’s Home and Brooklands – as well as creating a new access road and parking arrangements for the school.

To the north of the site is Alexandra House, a recently constructed residential home run by Suffolk County Council, which provides care for vulnerable children and young adults.

To the east is Riverwalk School, with the playing fields of Westgate Primary School to the south.

Havebury – which manages more than 6,000 homes in Bury and Haverhill – is also consulting on a 32-property plan close by at the former site of The Priors pub, as efforts are made to provide accommodation for the more than 1,500 people on St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s social housing waiting list.
