The annual Doughnut Dash took place in Colchester on Sunday, with dozens of runners consuming hundreds of doughnuts while running 5km.

The race, which supports Kidney Research UK, was the fifth and last one organised by Katie Taylor, 34, whose work and childcare commitments mean she is taking a step back.

“I wanted to go out with a bang,” she said. “The first one was meant to be a one off, because my husband has kidney disease and I wanted to do something to support the charity. But it went so well it became a regular thing.”

The race sees each runner eat five doughnuts at several checkpoints, while running between each one.

“It is harder than you think,” said Mrs Taylor, who has two young children Peyton and Jenson, and works in London. “We have raised around £20,000, but we should be nearer to £25,000 after all the money comes in.”
