A Colchester man who punched a 19-year-old in the face causing a broken jaw has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Before Ipswich Crown Court was Jordan Maddox, 23, of Eld Lane, Colchester, who denied inflicting grievous bodily harm on the teenager in June 2016, but was found guilty after a trial.

He was given an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 150 hours’ unpaid work in the community.

Maddox claimed he approached the other man, now 20, in Colchester town centre after his girlfriend pointed him out and accused him of making a racist comment to her a week earlier.

Maddox then asked him to apologise, but he refused.

He said he had thrown a single punch in self defence.

The prosecution claimed Maddox accused the alleged victim of being racist towards his partner and then punched him causing his jaw to break in two places.
