Throw a stone in the Donovan household and you’re likely to hit an artist – and nowhere is the talent of the Leitch clan more evident than at the Aldeburgh Gallery.

The folk legend performs a musical opening to an exhibition of work by his extended family on Saturday, May 6.

On show until May 10, the Eye Wild Exhibition includes prints and paintings by sister-in-law Carol Lawrence – Shotley resident and exhibition curator, who united the photography of her daughter, Jessica Lee Short, and son-in-law, Geege Sandhu, with the mixed media images of nephew, Julian, son of Rolling Stone, Brian Jones, and stepson of Donovan.

The Glasgow-born songwriter, who lives with wife Linda in County Cork, had been exhibiting his own Sapphograph prints – inspired by the Greek poet – with his granddaughter Coco Sian’s painting in Dublin when the idea for an Aldeburgh show came up.

“Carol called to say she had an exhibition – and it’s another family affair,” said the Mellow Yellow singer, whose daughters Astrella and Oriole, and grandsons Joolz and Sebastian, boast equally varied talents in music, writing and fashion design.

“I love to support the arts – and I’m as keen to support members of the family. I suppose all of us were brought up in a slightly bohemian atmosphere.

“My father wrote poetry and did amateur dramatics, but inspired me to attend political gatherings, informing my music, which has been considered differently over the years but essentially made me known as a ‘poet of the people’.

“Carol and I have worked together on creative projects, and her daughter [Jess] has been illustrating my work for some time. It’s wonderful to see them working together.

“Linda’s here with work by Julian, who made music from a young age before taking up digital photography. Geege Sandhu is another family member, whose work I’m seeing for the first time.”

The opening, from 12.30pm-2pm on May 6, will feature live music from Donovan and contemporary classical singer Therese Herbe-George, and the poetry of Carol Lawrence’s husband, Ian Griffiths, reading from his new book, Conversations with Birds.

There in spirit will be Carol’s late mother – an inspiration for the exhibition – who carried a love of singing into her 80s, when she recorded with Donovan.
