Leiston goalkeeper Ashlee Jones has spoken about the alleged racial abuse he received during the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Lowestoft Town on Easter Monday.

The 29-year-old, whose uncle, Troy Townsend, is the education manager at anti-discrimination organisation, Kick It Out, was playing against his former club at Victory Road when the alleged incident occurred.

Jones, who claims he has been racially abused at another football club this season, said: “It came totally out of the blue.

“I was taking a goal kick and I had heard them call me another (non-racial) name three or four times and when that didn’t work they took it to the extreme.

“For five seconds or so I just stood there and though ‘Did they really say that to me?

“I know what they are trying to do, they are trying to get under my skin and affect my game but they took things too far.”

Jones added: “If I was someone else, who didn’t have the support network I have behind me, I could turn round and say ‘Do you know what, I can’t be bothered with this anymore’.

“It took a lot for me not to react and had the ball gone out of play 30 seconds or so after I would have jumped over the fence and confronted the person.”

In a statement, Lowestoft said they were investigating this and a separate incident involving an alleged assault on one of their players after the game.

It said: “As a club we do not and will not condone any forms of racist behaviour and are urging the person in question to be responsible for their actions and come forward. We are also urging anyone with information to please contact us immediately, so that the club can deal with this in the appropriate manner.

“Lowestoft Town will not tolerate racism, homophobia, violence, etc in any shape or form and will deal with such actions in the firmest possible way.”

The statement added: “The culprit has no place in our club, football or life and we will do everything in our power to bring this person to justice.”

Leiston chairman Andy Crisp said the club would not comment on the alleged assault, until they had gathered all the facts together, while Suffolk police were not aware of any incidents arising from the game.

The Football Association (FA), have confirmed they are investigating both matters.
