A classic Ferrari could raise more than £500,000 tomorrow for the East Anglian Air Ambulance after its Suffolk-based owner died last year and left it to the charity.

Racing driver and motor enthusiast Richard Allen was director of the UK Ferrari Owners’ Club and once witnessed the helicopter coming to the aid of one of his fellow race drivers after a crash.

His 1964 Ferrari Nembo Spider will be auctioned by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

The cash could help the charity build a new helicopter hangar, which would mean the ambulance could be staffed an extra 180 hours a year.

Mr Allen died on November 26. He bought the Nembo from Italy in the mid 1990s and decided not to drive it on the road but display it regularly at Ferrari events in the UK.

He grew up in Essex and started racing in the early 1960s in Ford Anglias.
