This year, the teams were split so rather than a team of challengers against former players, both sides had a smattering of professionals.

The game finished 4-3, with a team featuring Russell Osman, Darren Currie, David Wright and Gavin Johnson triumphing over a team featuring Alan Lee, Wayne Brown, Matt Holland and Simon Milton. The latter, who is Ipswich’s academy director, went off injured after rupturing his Achilles.

The match raised more than £5,000 for the West Suffolk Hospital charity My WiSH’s Forget-Me-Not dementia campaign and the ITFC Academy with an extra £1,400 raised from a ‘Legends Evening’ with Terry Butcher and Matt Holland. This takes the total raised from the event to more than £21,000 since it first started four years ago.

Sue Smith, fundraising manager for My WiSH Charity, said: “We wanted to try something different this year by pitting Legends against Legends and we are delighted with how much was raised for two very worthwhile causes.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported both the Legends evening and also Sunday’s match.”

She also said the whole of My WiSH charity wanted to thank Milton for all of his support since the match first started and to wish him a speedy recovery.
