A Suffolk school has planned a special assembly next month to present the thousands of pounds raised by hundreds of pupils, parents, governors and staff members in aid of seriously ill children.

Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham organised a “2020” challenge recently, which saw around 300 walkers take to the footpaths around the town in the hope of raising £20,000 to be shared between the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and the Friends of the School.

More than 100 marshals also volunteered to support the fundraisers around a 20km cause, including 40 from the US Air Force bases at Lakenheath and Mildenhall.

Next month, EACH’s Helen Shepherd will attend a special assembly to receive a cheque from the school and meet with sponsors to explain how their donations will help the hospice’s work.

Organising committee member Sue Smith praised the “wonderful sense of community” on the day.

“The walkers really enjoyed the glorious countryside in the Framlingham area and the event has benefitted from support from many local people,” she added.

“We were especially grateful to a large contingent of volunteers from the American air bases. We are hopeful of raising thousands of pounds for the two causes which the walk is supporting.”
