Fans of BBC series Antiques Road Trip will be in for an exciting treat later this year – featuring an exceptional sale in Bury St Edmunds.
The show sees two experts, travelling in a classic car, buying antiques and selling them at auction, over the course of a week’s worth of shows, to see who can make the greatest profit from an initial £200 budget.
An episode to be shown later this year in August was filmed in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday, May 13, featuring experts Paul Laidlaw and Kate Bliss.
The auction was one run by Lacy Scott and Knight, with eight items going under the hammer – but it was the last one which is sure to get antiques fans excited.
The 19th century Adolphe Bertsch Chambre Automatique/Chambre Microscopique camera being sold by Mr Laidlaw was bought for just £100 – but sold for a record-breaking price not seen in the shows history.
It smashed the £3,800 sale recorded by Anita Manning in a show televised last November by some margin.
Ed Crichton, fine art manager at Lacy Scott and Knight in Bury St Edmunds, said it had been a great experience having the show filmed at the auction house.
“They asked us about two months ago if they could film some items in the sale,” he said. “They were wonderful to deal with, perfectly charming and very popular with many of our regular bidders.”
Of the camera he said: “It’s incredibly rare and we couldn’t find another example anywhere,” adding to see such a relatively cheap item sell for its eventual hammer price was “incredibly rare” – and was also a record sale for one of the auctioneer’s general sales.
John Redshaw, from Antiques Road Trip producer STV Productions, said: “Its fantastic that in the fifteenth series of Antiques Road Trip our experts are finding hidden gems that are attracting great interest and profit at auction.
“We look forward to the episode airing on BBC One later this year so viewers can see how much the rare camera achieved at auction.”
