Improvements to a Bury St Edmunds underpass have been carried out thanks to team work from many organisations and companies in the town.

A chance meeting between Melanie Lesser, Bury in Bloom coordinator, and resident Sarah Ruczaj, who uses the underpass from Parkway to the Cattle Market regularly, resulted in the work being done.

Sarah got a group of volunteers together to paint the ceiling, remove any graffiti and pick up any rubbish, while Melanie offered to source funding for better signage, a clear map and attractive photographs of the town to decorate the walls.

B&Q donated paint, Coastline Graphics designed the signage and St Edmundsbury Borough Council tidied the planting around the underpass.

Suffolk County Council also agreed to leave the underpass lights on all day.

Funding for the project came from Bury St Edmunds Town Council, Our Bury St Edmunds and Bury in Bloom.

Melanie said: “We have already had a number of compliments on the new look underpass.”
