A day-long celebration of 14th century radical priest John Ball, who lived in Colchester and led the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381, will be held for the first time this year.
The inaugural ‘John Ball Day’ this Saturday will include the unveiling of a plaque in his honour by the Bishop of Colchester and the Labour peer and Essex University Chancellor, Shami Chakrabarti.
The events – which will be held at a range of arts venues such as Firstsite – include live music, reading, theatrical performances, as well as a forum to discuss the relevance of Ball and his teachings to today’s society.
Firstsite director Sally Shaw said: “John Ball was a force for change in our country, and...puts Colchester at the centre of the unending campaign to make our society a fairer, more just place to live.”
