Market traders running food and drink stalls on Queen Street in Ipswich have held crisis talks with the borough council over the future of their businesses.

They are worried for their survival because few people have ventured to the new market site since they were forced to move off the Cornhill when reconstruction work started at the end of January.

The stallholders were due to attend a private meeting with council market chiefs on Thursday afternoon – ironically the talks come at the end of what looks set to be the best day’s trading since they moved to Queen Street.

The fine weather brought out customers – especially workers from offices in the area – and there were queues for some of the stalls at lunchtime.

However stallholders said business was still considerably down on what it would have been in their former home on the Cornhill – although it was their best day so far on Queen Street.
