An Ipswich school has been told it requires special measures following an Ofsted report last year.

Rose Hill Primary School in Derby Road had previously been rated in band three (satisfactory) by inspectors but has now been downgraded to the fourth and lowest category ‘inadequate’.

The report, which comes after an inspection on October 9-10, 2013 and was published in December, also says Rose Hill requires special measures, meaning they are “failing to give their pupils an acceptable standard of education”.

The inspection is broken down into four areas: Achievement of pupils, quality of teaching and leadership and management are all classed as inadequate while behaviour and safety of pupils is marked one band higher at ‘requires improvement’.

The report goes on to highlight a summary of its findings, saying: “Achievement over time is inadequate. Pupils do not make enough progress and leave the school with attainment in English and mathematics that is below average.

“Improvements made over the last 18 months have been too slow and not had sufficient impact on standards.

“The quality of teaching over time has not been good enough. Pupils’ work is not always matched precisely enough to their needs and does not fully challenge the more able.

“Teachers expectations are too low. They do not all ask challenging questions and too readily accept work that is poorly presented.

“Governors have not held the school to account rigorously enough for the progress and attainment of pupils and the quality of teaching.

“A number of parents and carers expressed concern about the level of communication between school and home.”

However it does acknowledge that “members of the governing body, leaders and managers are determined to improve the school” and adds the school’s strengths are that “pupils are courteous and show respect to each other and staff,” that “children in the Early Years Foundation Stage make good progress,” and “pupils say they feel safe and secure within school.”

The school declined to comment on the report.
