Votes from residents of a Suffolk town helped three local charities walk away from a building society with a generous donation.

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society (N&P), in Leiston High Street, shared £1,000 between the charities after a two-week public vote determined how the jackpot should be split.

Animal Health Trust received £500, Suffolk Mind received £300, and stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands received £200.

Branch manager Nikki Watson said: “We had a brilliant response to the campaign from our members, local shoppers and residents, but of course the real winners here are the charities – all of whom do a fantastic job of providing invaluable support in our local community.”

The donation comes from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation and was funded by the Small Change, Big Difference scheme, which asks members to donate just the pennies from the interest they receive on their Yorkshire accounts.
