A 17-year-old girl told police she was raped in Chelmsford on Friday night.
Essex Police said the incident took place in Viaduct Road in the town at 10.30pm on April 21.
The teenager is receiving support from specially-trained officers.
Police investigating the incident have charged a man, aged 38, of no fixed abode, with rape following the incident.
He is due to appear in Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
Essex Police released details of the incident this morning.
Confirming the details in a statement, a force spokesman said: “A man has been charged with rape following an incident in Chelmsford.
“A 17-year-old girl reported to police she had been raped in Viaduct Road at 10.30pm on Friday April 21.
“She is being supported by specially-trained officers.
“The 38-year-old man of no fixed abode has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, Monday April 24.”
