I so wanted to love this show. Following years of mild brainwashing as a child – thanks Mum – I have long been a huge fan of musicals and in particular the fabulous collection from MGM.

Who can resist the perfect mix of fun and romance blended with songs from music masters such as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter? Not me.

However, this evening of vintage Hollywood magic definitely lacked a little sparkle.

Singer Robert Habermann has a good swinging voice and I enjoyed the little bits of history that accompanied each song, and the movie poster backdrop, but it all felt a bit bland.

Perhaps this was, in part, down to the playlist as it featured some obscure choices and many of my personal favourites were rushed through at the end – for example, Stranger in Paradise (Kismet).

Or maybe it lacked atmosphere as the theatre was rather empty. Either way, I left feeling both disappointed and wishing I had stayed at home with popcorn and the real thing.
