Multi-million-pound plans for a dilapidated warehouse to be demolished and replaced with homes in north Essex have been given the green light.

Tendring District Council’s planning committee has approved the scheme in Mistley, which will create 45 properties.

The new homes will be situated between High Street and Mistley Quay once the empty riverside warehouse is knocked down.

Members of the planning committee originally granted permission in March but the deadline to complete the legal agreement by June 4 was missed by five days meaning that Tendring’s head of planning was no longer authorised by the planning committee to grant conservation area consent and planning permission.

Carlo Guglielmi, the district council’s cabinet member for planning and corporate services, said it was necessary for the application to be considered by the committee again to ensure procedures were correctly followed.

He added: “As there hasn’t been any significant change in National Planning Guidance it naturally follows that recommendation from Officers was one of approval and I am delighted that the planning committee agreed with it.”

The scheme involves knocking down the existing Thorn Quay Warehouse and putting up a new building with one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

It also includes 420sq m of quay level warehousing, 86sq m of office floor space as well as car and cycle parking.

The application was submitted by Anglia Maltings (Holdings) Ltd and Gladedale Estates Ltd.

The legal agreement is there to ensure that if the predicted sales values increase, Tendring District Council is able to reassess the developer’s financial contributions towards education, public open space and affordable housing.
