More than 50 people were caught not wearing seatbelts after a police crackdown in Clacton last week.

Officers carried out an operation near Olivers Road on Wednesday, September 6, and issued penalties to 56 people who had not belted up.

In addition to the operation, four people were caught using a mobile phone and two had no insurance, while two people were stopped for careless driving.

One person was found to be disqualified from driving and had no insurance, and a further two people were also caught driving without a valid MOT and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Matt Hine, from Essex Police’s casualty reduction section, said: “Be warned that we are out and about watching for people who think they are above the law.

“You may believe that it is okay not to wear a seatbelt but it is not. It could have serious consequences for you, and someone else.

“These small operations are important. We are keeping the heat turned up on drivers who clearly have little regard for themselves or other road users.”
