The mother of a 21-year-old killed in a crash at the same spot which claimed the life of a teenage girl this month has called for a lower speed limit on the road.

Kyle Martin died in a collision at Brickman’s Hill bridge, between Mistley and Bradfield, on November 28, 2013.

His mother has spoken out after Carys Hammond, from Bradfield, was also killed there on April 17 this year.

She said the cause of the crash had been put down to Mr Martin’s inexperience. He had passed his test only two weeks before the crash, and was just one point over the drink-drive limit – a level she said police told her they would not have arrested him for had he been stopped.

She added: “I still can’t drive down that road. I think it is very dangerous, and they need to cut the speed limit – that’s all it will take.

“They have put more speed awareness signs there for the corner and things, and cut back the bushes, but it goes downhill to a horrible corner.

“I also hope with the introduction of more advanced tests for drivers, including driving at night and along country lanes, will help.”

Campaigners, including two local driving instructors, have pressed for safety improvements on the notorious stretch of road – with one, chairman of the Colchester and District Driving Instructors’ Association Mark Cole, having previously submitted detailed proposals for such a scheme.

Miss Hammond died after her Fiat 500 collided with the bridge.

Mr Martin’s mother added: “I was mortified when I heard someone else had been killed there.

“My heart goes out to her family because we know what they are going through.”

Police want to speak to anyone who had driven past the site in the two weeks before the collision on April 17, and who has dash cam footage. They also want to speak to anyone recently involved in a collision at the site and who has struck the bridge.

Tributes have been paid to Suffolk One student Miss Hammond, who has been described as “vibrant, intelligent, vivacious”.

An inquest was opened into her death earlier this week.
