A Suffolk village is looking to catch speeding motorists in the act after new technology revealed vehicles had been clocked doing up to 55mph along a residential road.

Wickham Market Parish Council installed speed signs on The Hill last month with the first recorded data revealing a concerning pattern of late night speeders.

Parish chairman Dick Jenkinson said that while the average recorded speed of just over 30mph was considered “pretty good” there were exceptions.

“The worrying thing is that on each tranche of data there are three of four cars that go up The Hill at between 50 and 55mph and some of these have been recorded in the middle of the night,” he said.

Newly co-opted councillor Ray Clunes said it might be lorries, which he had heard “come roaring past” in the early morning.

Mr Jenkinson said Wickham Market Partnership was looking to join Community Speedwatch so offenders could be identified.
