Drugs raids in Bury St Edmunds have unearthed a machete and sledgehammer along with a haul of suspected crack cocaine and heroin.

Officers at Suffolk police have revealed a wave of drug raids have taken place in the past few days across the west of the county, leading to 11 arrests and the seizure of hundreds of wraps of class A drugs.

Detective Inspector Craig Brett said: “We will be doing more work to target those suspected of being involved in the supply of controlled drugs and will continue to carry out pro-active warrants and visits to make life difficult for anyone bringing drugs into Suffolk.”

Following the Bury raid on April 5, five men have been charged with conspiracy to supply crack cocaine and heroin.

Along with the weapons and rocks, police also seized 190 wraps of what is believed to be crack cocaine and 111 wraps of suspected heroin. They also found white rocks thought to be crack cocaine and a bag of cannabis.

Four of the men charged are from the London area but one, Stephen Wass, 54, lives in Firtree Close in Bury. The five appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on April 6, where they were remanded in custody and are now due to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on May 4.

On April 4, police raided a home in Lancaster Avenue, in Bury. An 18-year-old man from south-west London and a 43-year-old woman from Bury were arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply.

Police said more than 70 wraps, believed to contain class A drugs, were seized along with a large quantity of cash and three mobile phones. Both have been released under investigation.

A teenager was also arrested at the Recreation Ground at Camps Road, in Haverhill, and given a youth caution for possession of cannabis on April 7. He was with a 42-year-old man who has been charged with possession of crack cocaine. Both had been detained for a drugs search by police around 12.30pm.

Police also arrested two men at an address in Haverhill’s Western Avenue on April 6. A 32-year-old man from the town was arrested on suspicion of possessing a class A drug with intent to supply and a 19-year-old man from Sheffield was arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. Wraps and around £800 in cash were recovered.
