The future whereabouts of a Suffolk statue have been narrowed down to five spots within the town it was in danger of departing.

A public vote will establish an eventual home for the Drummer Boy statue, which campaigners fought to keep in Woodbridge after Suffolk Coastal District Council wanted it relocated to new headquarters in neighbouring Melton.

Woodbridge Town Council has listed five possible sites for the statue, which currently stands outside the district council offices on Melton Hill – a site due for redevelopment following Suffolk Coastal’s departure later this year.

Campaigners claimed the Drummer Boy was donated by the Ninth Earl of Albemarle to the ‘people of the town’ after his father (the statue’s sculptor) died in 1979, and that his countess wife wished it to be on public display in Woodbridge following his own death.

Suffolk Coastal argued it was the custodian of the statue – having paid for any care and repair – but with no evidence found to determine its rightful owner, the accommodation project board said it was willing to transfer custody to the town council, and has also agreed to fund its relocation from the budget set aside for moving to Melton.

The five possible locations are the entrance to Elmhurst Park, off Lime Kiln Quay Road; Kingston Field; the paved area of the market square at the back of the Shire Hall; the cobbled area of the market square in front of the Shire Hall, or in the Garden of Remembrance on Market Hill.
