A year of success ended on a high at Saxmundham Primary following a ‘good’ Ofsted rating from inspectors, which headteacher Elaine Hawes, who is retiring after 13 years, said recognised the significant efforts made by everyone associated with the school.

Alongside rising attainment levels, the school has seen outstanding sporting success, winning seven of nine inter-school sports competitions. In the arts, it won prizes for painting and handwriting at Saxmundham Horticultural Society’s Christmas Show, while three pupils’ pictures appeared at Aldeburgh Peter Pears gallery in February.

In March, the school took part in A Celebration of Schools’ Music at Snape Maltings and then put on its own concert in June.

Year five pupils then handed the Suffolk Farming School of the Year prize by Prince Harry at the Suffolk Show.

Teachers Amanda Humphry, Jill Peyry and Lesley Fennell are also leaving the school this summer. Mrs Hawes said that all three had made a “great contribution to the development of the school”.
