A car has crashed into a pub in St Osyth, Clacton, this afternoon, causing severe delays in the area.

Emergency services were called at 4.19pm to the stretch of road near the Colchester Road junction, where a single car had gone into The Hoy pub.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokeswoman said two ambulance crews, two response cars, a hazardous area response team and the East Anglian Air Ambulance have been called.

Paramedics remain on the scene, but it is not yet clear if anyone has been injured.

UPDATE: A man, named locally as Ron Ramsey, was killed in the incident.

The road is currently blocked with heavy traffic in both directions while emergency services are on the scene.

Officers at the scene said the road was unlikely to be open to either pedestrians or motorists for several hours.

A force spokesman said: “Currently, there is a complete closure at the junction of Colchester Road and The Bury and this will remain in place for at least number of hours.

“People are asked to avoid the area and make alternative travel arrangements this evening.

“Updates will be issued as soon as possible and drivers are thanked for their patience.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident can contact police on 101.”

A tweet from the Essex Police force control room account, said: “Please bear with us whilst we deal with a serious collision on Clacton Road #stosyth - RPU officers in attendance - will be closed a while.”

The junction, which is the only crossroad in the village, is known locally as ‘bar corner’ due to the presence of the pub.

Motorists are being advised to use an alternative route while emergency services work at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information to help police with their investigation should contact 101.
