A Bury St Edmunds-based paediatrician is to receive a national award at a national ceremony headlined by Prince Harry.

Bury St Edmunds community consultant paediatrician Dr Lucy Grove has been named as a winner in the prestigious national 2017 WellChild Awards, in association with GSK, and will collect her prize at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Dr Grove was picked from hundreds of nominations from across the UK to win the category of Best Doctor in these awards which celebrate the courage of children coping with serious illnesses and honour the dedication of professionals who go the extra mile to help sick children and their families.

The Awards are run by WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children.

Part of the integrated community paediatrics services team provided by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Grove will be one of the stars of the show at this month’s high profile Awards ceremony, which has been attended over the past few years by many of WellChild’s celebrity supporters, including Royal Patron Prince Harry.

Dr Grove was nominated by colleagues and the parents of patients who commended the positive impact her holistic approach to working with other professionals and the families of her patients has on the overall care they receive.

Charmaine Peploe, who nominated Dr Grove, recalls how she went out of her way to help keep Charmaine’s daughter, Katie, out of hospital and home with the family last Christmas.

Charmaine said: “We have so many precious memories of being together at home as a family with Katie which might not have been possible without Dr Grove’s exceptional care.

“She even popped in to visit us on Christmas Eve on her way to buy her own family’s Christmas tree.

“With Katie’s degenerative condition, we know that every Christmas might be our last together and it makes such a difference to have a doctor who understands what that means to us.”

Speaking at the 2016 WellChild Awards, Prince Harry said: “This is now my ninth WellChild Awards and each year at this remarkable event, I am profoundly moved by the people I have met and the stories they have shared with me.”
