A scaled down replica of a famous burial ship unearthed on the banks of a Suffolk river will be one of the attractions sailing into a celebration of maritime life next month.
Maritime Woodbridge will celebrate the town’s nautical heritage on September 13 and 14, as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme.
Thames Barges and traditional boats will be on display along the quay side, including three boats once owned by Arthur Ransome, of Swallows and Amazons fame, and Sae Wylfing (Sea-wolf Cub), a 13-metre replica of the Sutton Hoo burial ship that held an Anglo-Saxon king and his crown jewels. The boat is on loan to the Woodbridge Riverside Trust, the group involved in regenerating the Whisstocks Boatyard site, which over the weekend will house stalls and activities including the coracle pond, giving youngsters their first taste of the water.
Sailing clubs and boatyards will be open, as will heritage buildings and churches further inland. Find out more at maritimewoodbridge.org.
