Almost 50 new courses have been unveiled by the University of Suffolk ahead of an open day this weekend.
Degrees in cyber security, politics, law, marketing, and architecture are just some of the new degrees included in the university’s undergraduate prospectus for 2018/19.
There are 46 new courses in total, pushing the overall total number of courses at the university to 260. Prospective students can find out more about the degrees at an open day at the waterfront campus on Saturday, from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
Professor Nicholas Caldwell, who will help lead the new three-year BSc (Hons) Cyber Security, said: “We believe that every professional in the industry has the duty to be fully competent in cyber security in order to build secure and safe systems, networks and apps. Our new cyber security degree is intended for those who want to become true specialists in this area, with their principal focus in cyber supplemented with key computing skills in programming, databases, cloud and analytics. We expect that our graduates will become secure developers, threat analysts, architects, consultants, cyber forensics investigators, among other roles.”

Associate professor David James, who will help lead the Politics degrees, said: “Politics is about power, ideas and values. Politics at Suffolk will give students the knowledge and space to engage deeply with political practice, political ideas, and philosophy.
“The course offers a distinct focus on ‘political action’ across party politics, campaigns and community politics. The backbone of this degree is to allow students to develop campaigning and community politics skills through involvement in project work and applied research. The course will also explore the British and international political structures that provide a crucial backdrop to all political and community action.
“Politics graduates have an important range of analytical, data and organisational skills applicable to a full range of graduate opportunities. Jobs directly related to a politics degree include Government and Civil Service roles, covering public affairs, consultancy and research. Jobs in the field of marketing, media, public relations, and local government are also popular.
“The course is intended to attract student locally, nationally and internationally. We welcome applications from students with either A levels, BTEC qualifications, other international qualifications or an Access to Higher Education Diploma.”
Dr Nic Bury, senior lecturer in life sciences, who will help lead the BSc (Hons) Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation Science (subject to validation), added: “Wildlife is under increasing pressure from habitat loss, hunting and pollution. We are introducing this course because we have a passion for wildlife and want to train and educate people in how best to conserve animals and plants for a sustainable future.
“We are also introducing the course because of educational opportunities our region offers. Students will receive expert training by colleagues at Colchester Zoo in zoo management and conservation. The Suffolk countryside is exquisite. Suffolk has an extraordinary number of sites of special scientific interest, with important nature conservation sites on our coast and estuaries, and in our woodlands.
“The job opportunities upon graduation are varied. They include work in organisations involved in management and conservation projects, as well as environmental or ecological consultancies, and local government agencies.”
