A piece of Suffolk history is making another comeback following its successful resurrection in 2013.

Organisers of Woodbridge Carnival have proved that last year’s revival was not a one-off event by announcing its return this summer.

Local business promoter Choose Woodbridge has promised that the 2014 event will be bigger and better - and a day longer.

Like last year, the carnival will take place on Kingston Field, but this time it will take place over the full weekend of July 5 and 6.

The main carnival and procession will be on the Saturday, with a classic car show planned for the Sunday, and a fun fair in place for the whole weekend.

The carnival committee is encouraging local clubs and organisations to get involved by decorating their own float for the procession, which last year included local charities, dance troupes, cheerleaders and businesses.

Classic car clubs are being invited to join in the show on Sunday - and the search is also on for a Carnival Queen to be the centre of attention and perform official duties during the weekend’s festivities.

Graham Shemmings, who is leading the Choose Woodbridge Carnival committee for a second year, said: “We had such a positive reaction to the carnival last year that we just had to do it again.

“We’ve learned a lot from last year and have brought some really good ideas to the table for this year.

“We’d like everyone who wants to be involved to have the opportunity and we have already had a lot people book their floats, stalls and entertainment for the weekend.

“It’s fabulous to see this family event picking up so much momentum after just one year.”

The carnival was given a new lease of life last year, when organisers decided to draw on the enthusiasm generated from the previous summer of celebration, which included The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic Torch procession and a stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race.

Choose Woodbridge felt the time was right to revive the once popular annual celebration, which was stopped around 30 years ago because of waning interest.

This year’s event will also feature a range of trade stands, along with food and drink vendors and a lively programme of carnival entertainment.

Events on the field will start at around 2pm and include children’s races, which were very popular last year, majorettes, brass bands, a tug-of-war and possibly some professional displays.

More details about the weekend programme of family fun will be released nearer the time.
