Cake Shop Bakery in Woodbridge has opened a new bakery facility at Bentwaters Business Park to enable it to increase its production by 20% to keep pace with demand from local hotels, restaurants and retailers.

David Wright, the third generation, of the family to run the business, said: “We are particularly keen to grow the wholesale side of the business providing bread and cakes for retailers including farm shops and delis as well as hospitality businesses in Suffolk.

“We have been limited in our capacity to supply other businesses until now, and we’re excited that the new site will enable us to grow.”

The new bakery started baking in June, after a major fit-out and investment in new equipment including a specialist oven which significantly increases capacity.

“Our first day baking at Bentwaters was like everyone’s first day,” said David. “It’s been challenging for me and all our experienced bakers to get used to the new equipment and space, but we are quickly getting into routine and will soon be reaping the benefits of the bigger space.”

The original bakery behind the shop on Woodbridge High Street will still be used every day. The expansion has created two new jobs at Bentwaters Park and three in Woodbridge and the business expects to take on more new staff to add the current team of 30.

The move is also expected to relieve traffic pressure in the town centre as all deliveries to and from the bakery will now go straight to Bentwaters.

The Wright family made the decision to invest in new facilities in October 2016 with the objective of growing the business, but the first challenge was to find a suitable location.

During the move the bakery did not lose a single day of production. David said he was inspired by the business coaching he has received from Suffolk-based entrepreneur Stephen Unwin, founder of Cawston Press.

The business has been supported in its investment by Lloyds Bank and has used many local firms in the refit of the facilities, including Steve Smith Electrical CN Plumbing.

The design and fit-out of the new bakery was supported by Somerset-based Brook Food Processing.
