BAFA Premiership South Bury Saints 58 Farnham Knights 26 The Bury Saints got back to winning ways after a 0-2 start to the season with a huge 58-26 win over the Farnham Knights.
The Saints wasted no time setting the tone of the game when, on the second play, running back Cory Jenkins took a hand-off and blazed his way for a breathtaking 75 yard score and a 6-0 lead.
Ameer Thompson made it 12-0 before the Knights pulled a score back to make it 12-6.
After a Saints’ drive stalled, rookie Brailyn Anderson continued to amaze with yet another interception, and Fred Boyle then hit Aaron Wheatley from 44 yards out to make it 18-6.
The Knights fought back to make it 18-13, but Boyle found Thompson soon after to extend the lead to 25-13.
But the Knights refused to go away, scoring again to make it 25-20 approaching the end of a breathless first half.
Then the Saints kicked into overdrive, starting with Dante Gooden returning the kick-off all the way down to the Knights’ 10 yard line. The Saints wasted no time with a quick Boyle touchdown pass on the next play. The Saints went for two and Jenkins ploughed over for 2 points to make the score 33-20 at the end of the half.
After halftime the Saints mounted an 87 yard drive, with Jenkins finishing it off with a seven-yard TD to make it 39-20.
Once again the Knights pulled back, making it 39-26, but that was as close as they would get.
Three more touchdown passes from Boyle gave him six on the day to complete the scoring at 58-26.
The defence was also superb with help from a fumble recovery by Zach Hill and an interception and long return from Chris Smith.
Saints head coach Christian Cantrill said: “I’m pleased with how the team responded being 0-2, and they played well for the vast majority of the game but had our share a of errors that we know we can’t commit next week against the National Champion London Warriors at home. To get back to winning Bury Saints Football was our goal today and the players and staff responded to that and did well. Next week will be another stern test of our resolve and we have some work to do to prepare for them. “
The Saints host the London Warriors at Thetford Rugby club on Sunday with a 2pm kick-off.
