Tom Lapslie believes that Colchester United’s superior fitness will stand them in good stead for the quick turnaround in matches, culminating in tomorrow afternoon’s away test at Morecambe.

The U’s used up a lot of energy, during Good Friday’s thunderous and richly entertaining 1-1 draw against leaders Doncaster, who had already secured promotion to League One.

Just 72 hours later and the U’s will be running out at the Globe Arena, hoping to end a dismal away record that has not seen them win on the road during 2017.

“We’ve got four games left, and 12 points is our target,” insisted Lapslie.

“I feel we are one of the fittest teams in this league, so it will only benefit us playing again so soon, especially as Morecambe have just had a game as well.

“Age helps us as well. A lot of our pre-season was based on running, and a lot of our game is based on our running – in 95% of games we’re running more than the opposition and winning most of them.

“Youth will help I believe, and the elder statesmen in our team will look after themselves.

“We’ve had a constant side the last few weeks, after all the injuries, which has also helped,” added Lapslie.

The U’s have not won away from home since a 4-2 triumph at Stevenage on New Year’s Eve. Since then, they have mustered just three points from a possible 24 in eight away games.

“We’re just two points off it still, so Saturday was a good point for us,” continued Lapslie.

“We want to be in play-offs, as much as the fans and coaching staff. We’re certainly not going to miss out without a fight.

“It’s now a fantastic opportunity for us, playing at Morecemabe. We fully fancy ourselves against them.

“I don’t know what it is away from home with us, but we are looking to put it right with three points.”

The U’s are currently just two points and two places off the play-offs, so stand a reasonable chance of moving into the top seven if they can win at Morecambe.

The two teams just above them, Blackpool and Carlisle, are against league leaders Doncaster and sixth-placed Stevenage respectively.

Tomorrow is the U’s penultimate away game – their last is at rock bottom Leyton Orient.
